Sightings report image

Date: 10/22/2022

Number: 16

11:30am - 12:30pm at Tip at Point Pelee National Park.
13°c Sunny with moderate SSW wind @15/22kmh.
13c on arrival & 17c on departure.
Daytime high 17°. Overnight low 13c.
About 15 monarch on this beautiful fall day seen on the warm sunny east side of the Tip
A few flew from the north high over tree tops or over shoreline. Saw at least 6 attempt to continue south over the lake but return to trees.
Cluster of 4 & others of 1, 2 & 3 basking in the sunshine on Mulberry & Hackberry trees about 5'up. All seen on east sunny side of trees/vines.
They were active often leaving their clusters to flit about east side then return to bask.

All but 1 pristine with plump abdomens. 1 had a couple pieces out of lower wing possibly from bird.

Asters still fresh & plentiful.

When I left the Tip area observed a monarch fly south through Tip shuttle stop area.

Wind will lighten Sunday afternoon 10/23 but remain southerly giving them a possible window to continue their journey south. Some will for sure attempt to fly off. Next north wind is Oct. 27th.

Warm temps of 15°+ & sunshine the next 3 or 4 days & afterward highs of around 12c.

Observations by eye, binoculars & camera.
