Using hummingbird feeder for nectar
[Contacted observer for more information about this observation; additional information and photo contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 10/27/2022]:
I only saw the hummingbird briefly at one of my feeders as it flew off quickly when it saw me. I think, but am not positive, that it was a female ruby throated. It was in the morning and overcast.
While I have a primarily native garden, I do always plant Tithonia (Mexican Sunflower)--see photo--that blooms here starting in August and lasts in bloom until November. It is strangely at least 12’ tall this year and the backyard section has around 40 blooms now so it could have caught the eye of a bird flying by. No fertilizer or amended soil but it may well have attracted the hummingbird because “my” summertime hummingbirds love it as do the bumble bees. It usually is more like 6’ tall.
