Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 11/09/2022

Number: 52

I counted 31 chrysalis, as well. Wish us luck that our milkweed holds out!

[Contacted observer for more information about this observation; additional information and photo contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 11/11/2022]:

We have approximately 3 dozen plants, comprised of 3 different varieties (tropical, balloon, and white swamp). They are in pots that we move into a 4’x10’x7’ netted area in the yard when we see caterpillars on them. They stay in there through the chrysalis phase and then released when they emerge.

Additionally, there are another 5 or 6 milkweed plants that self seeded into the lawn that do not get moved. The caterpillars on these are allowed to “free roam”.

We started seeing Monarchs visiting (I think) about 6 weeks ago, and saw occasional eggs, with a few making it to caterpillars. However, we started getting visits of several Monarchs each day about 2 weeks ago.

I took the count when I did because we noticed a slow down of Monarch butterfly visitations (only one or less per day), so I guess I would say it’s representative of three-ish weeks?

Our milkweed is almost depleted (we do not provide anything but milkweed) so I’m glad about the slow down.
