Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 11/15/2022

Number: 1

We observed either an adult female or juvenile rufous at one of our feeders today. She drank for a long time. We weren't able to see her front as she had her back to us. This is the 2nd rufous we've seen in a week. Last week, we had an adult male rufous here for a few days. He fed from both the feeders and flowers. This is the latest in the season, by nearly a month, that we've observed hummingbirds and it's the first time we have had rufous hummingbirds in the 3 years that we've been here.

The freeze we had earlier this week killed the remainder of our flowers. We are maintaining 2 heated hummingbird feeders, one in the front yard and one in the back for any stragglers. The temps here are going to drop into the mid 20s tomorrow night and stay that way at night for a week or so, which is early for here. We're usually mild through November and December, with real winter arriving January and staying through February. I pray this little straggler and all the others boogie along and make it to warmer winter destinations soon.
