I’m so enjoying the few posts of hummingbird sightings that appear on JN. Keep them coming! For Nima, Sophie, and others hosting rufous hummingbirds, I thought you might be interested in the attached screen shot from my BirdsEye app, showing an astonishing (to me)number of rufous sightings from Houston on East. I also wanted to reassure you about their ability to survive very cold temperatures. We had an immature rufous at our house here in southern Connecticut in 2002 (?) which arrived at the end of October and stayed until January 15th. We set up a work lamp to keep the feeder from freezing, and despite frequent temperatures in the teens and lower, it thrived and showed up every day. It left at a time when it would normally start migrating north on the west coast, so if your birds don’t show up one day in early to mid-January, Nima and Sophie, don’t think the worst! Good luck to all! These little birds are so lucky to have found such good homes. I look forward to your reports and to the next season!
