Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 12/03/2022

Our winter male juvenile rufous hummingbird, Raphy, is still with us. After speaking with an ornithologist and others who are sharing/have shared similar experiences, it appears that it is likely that Raphy will be with us all winter. He continues to visit both feeders throughout the day.

We're working to create a bit of a sheltered area around the feeder that is located on our back patio. Does anyone happen to know what types of evergreen shrubs/trees hummingbirds fancy for roosting/perching? I'm knowledgeable with what flowers, shrubs, and trees my rubies prefer in the summer, but trying to figure out a winter hummingbird's preferences is a whole new experience for me. Our plan is to place a large patio evergreen with some mixed roosting/perching pockets near his feeder and wrap it with Christmas lights to create some warmth. Perhaps, he'll choose to use it come January when winter does tend to arrive here in the Piedmont area of NC.

Any other suggestions/advice from others who are hosting/ have hosted winter hummingbirds would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. My email is sophie.legolvan71418@gmail.com and my phone number is 401-440-0574.
