Number: 1

I had some volunteer tropical milkweeds from our local extension master gardeners coming up by one of our farm buildings that were still full of caterpillars into early October. Most all had gone into their chrysalis by the end of the first full week of October. We had several nights around Oct. 23rd with temperatures in the low 20's. I pulled all the remaining chrysalis that I could find outdoors and moved them into a room in our barn that we always keep above freezing. This particular female monarch was in her j-hang for over 24hrs before forming her chrysalis on Oct. 5. She was the last to emerge - on Oct. 29th! When I released her, she flew for a bit and then landed in the grass. As we were scheduled to leave town for a couple of days, I picked her up and put her on some geraniums and moved her into full sun. When I returned on Nov. 2nd, she was gone. She was a very large female. Hope she made it to Mexico!
