Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 12/07/2022

Number: 1

Juvenile male Rufous Hummingbird, Columbus, ventured into the Greenhouse today, albeit accidentally. I had been keeping blooming plants in the doorway to blend outdoors with indoors to fool him. But that plan was WRONG. Today I opened the doors and went elsewhere. Columbus was inside the greenhouse when I returned under 2 minutes with no plants at the doorway. He wanted a clear path to get in.

Strangely, he was flying erratically, catching gnats, rather than sipping nectar from flowers. Drank 2x nectar (temp. 65*F) from feeders instead. Doors were open but didn't make attempt to get out. Then at dusk, he started visiting flowers. So, he was protein deficient. Didn't want to waste a single second with flowers when insects were active and visibility was good (rainy day). Got a poor video of him sipping nectar in the greenhouse. Posted on insta #million.blossoms. Better photos after he gets acclimatized.
