Bald Eagle

Date: 12/13/2022

Number: 1

My husband and i have lived in this community 10 years and are avid naturalists. We have never seen a bald eagle here before. It was perched in the persimmon tree next to our hay field. We were walking on the road as we saw it. It was easily identifiable by the very white head and contrasting black body. When it turned it's head side to side it had the iconic profile of the bald eagle, which made us quite excited as we were debating if we were imagining it, and it was some other type of bird. A car drove by on the road and it swooped down from the tree, displaying it's beautiful white tail feathers and prominent winglets, nearly perpendicular to its wings. I've never been that close to a bald eagle before, but it seemed enormous, larger than our local vultures. We are thrilled to have seen it!
