At Monarch Sanctuary, Pacific Grove

[Journey North Data Verifier Note: contacted observer for more information about this observation; additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 12/16/2022]:

I was in Monterey and Pacific Grove, CA just for the weekend and we were only in the Monarch Sanctuary for about 30 minutes. We wouldn't have even seen the clusters of Monarchs up in the tops of the trees if a local docent hadn't pointed them out. The count I gave was just a wild guess but there is a website that says there were 15,960 counted on December 4. The trees looked like eucalyptus to me. I don't know if they are protected from the wind there. The time was about 3 in the afternoon. The trees were on a hilltop and were catching the last rays of the sun after a stormy, rainy couple of days. The temperatures at night were probably in the low 40s or upper 30s. I'm not sure of the wind direction but it seemed to be blowing in from the ocean but I think Pacific Grove is on the part of the Monterey Bay facing South. The monarch by itself looked like it had just recently come out of it's chrysalis. I don't know what kind of flowering bush it was on. There are still flowers blooming in and around Pacific Grove and Monterey this time of year.
