We saw hundreds if not thousands at the monarch sanctuary
[Journey North Data Verifier Note: contacted observer for more information about this observation; information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 01/13/2022]:
I’ve been visiting the Pacific Grove Monarch Sanctuary for decades, since I was a little girl. I think the official counts recently have been around 11,000. We were there maybe 10 minutes. . .
The sanctuary is small, about 1 city block, it’s a winding path through eucalyptus trees, evergreens, and cypress I think.
We saw a mating pair in the clover on the ground.
The rest were either resting in the trees or flying around in the rare bit of sun we had after all the rains.
I would guesstimate 4,000
