Male Rufous still here in 2 days of sunny days for a change. More cold fronts with rain first this week coming. All we have that he likes is Rokin deep purple salvia. Red porterweed, not blooming much. Ignores coral honeysuckle, peach blossoms so far. Goes to feeders mostly. I have to be up before daylight to see him up close which is around 6:59 a.m at feeder. Dark photos only. He's too quick of a sip at feeder during daytime to photo.
I saw an article when Rufous are in, or migrating thru Mexico, with preferred flowers:
tree morning glories (Ipomoea arborescens),
ocotillo (Foquieria splendens and F. macdougalii),
various red mint flowers (Salvia elegans and Stachys coccinea),
“shrimp plant†(Justicia californica and J. candicans).
Had all those flowers but ocotillo before hard 2022 December freeze and before Rufous was sighted Jan 17th.2023. My cousin brought back ocotillo way back from west texas. It wouldn't bloom bc rains in Houston always.
