Milkweed (FIRST sighted)
Sightings report image

Date: 03/02/2023

Number: 1

I found our first milkweed sprouts of the season. Some seem to have been up for several days, given their development. I found 46 plants with some searching ~ everything is very green here so they tend to camouflage.

We have not yet seen any monarchs here since last fall. I did not see any eggs on the milkweed I looked at today.

The early nectar plants are blooming & abundant: false garlic flowers, yellow thistles, wild blackberry blossoms. Also, redbud trees & Mexican plum trees are in bloom.

This photo is of one of the native Asclepias viridis milkeed plants seen today. It is about 5 inches tall.
