Monarch Egg (FIRST sighted)
Sightings report image

Date: 03/05/2023

Number: 20

We saw our first monarchs of the season today. I followed a female as she went about laying her eggs on the native milkweed (Asclepias viridis). I observed her for about 30 minutes during which time she lay eggs on at least 20 plants (1-2 per plant). She did not need to overload the milkweed, as there were plenty of fresh sprouts to find (though it certainly took a careful search). This is a photo of one of the newly laid eggs.
