Number: 1

Here's Raphy, our 1st year male Rufous hummingbird, checking out all the songbird activity around him. He is mesmerized with them all. A pair of our resident Eastern Bluebirds has been busy nest building in their box, which is located relatively close by to Raphy's favorite feeder. This photo, thanks to our friend Paul Nielson, shows pretty extensive molting occurring around Raphy's crown and throat/gorget, with lots of pin feathers. When he is not perching and observing all the other birds, he is zooming all around the yard just as fast as he can go. He buzzed by our heads this afternoon, just checking us out. We're in for another cold snap, with night time temps down into the low 30s and even 20s for the next week or so. Thank goodness, daytime temps will be warmer. Lots of trees blooming and perennials coming up fast. Hopefully, they won't take too much of a hit with this cold.
