Throughout this day, from morning to late afternoon, I observed monarch activity (at least 10 individuals). There are still more females than males here currently. It was a very warm, calm day with abundant milkweed and nectar plants available: yellow thistles, false garlic flowers, wild blackberry blossoms.
The monarchs were flying around, nectaring, females fluttering low looking for milkweed & egg-laying, males sailing all over ~ keeping track of what matters to them: the milkweed, the females, and the yellow thistles.
This is a photo of one of the female monarchs as she nectars on wild blackberry blossoms in the late afternoon. She additionally nectared on a few false garlic flowers and then flew toward the trees for an evening rest.
