Sightings report image

Number: 5

Late on March 16th a front came through with thunderstorms and cooler temps for the recent days. We also got 1.5 inches of rain. Last night temps went down to near freezing. This afternoon I went about spot checking the milkweed for monarch eggs & larvae. It was sunny, 57 degrees F, 30% humidity, with strong gusty winds from the NW.

I found that the milkweed was healthy and observed many monarch eggs & larvae (1st and 2nd instars). I also saw 5 monarchs at different moments as I went about. Four were females who were looking at milkweeds to lay eggs on and resting/sunning. One monarch sailed about a bit, nectared briefly, and then (like the others) flew into the woodlands. The sunlight was warming, but the cold wind was a challenge for them.

This is a photo of the monarch who nectared from a mostly closed false garlic flower (Nothoscordum bivalve) in the late afternoon sunlight.
