Sightings report image

Date: 03/21/2023

Number: 4

At 12 noon today it was 68 degrees F, cloudy, with 80% humidity, and strong winds from the SE. The grass was still heavy with dew. I observed 4 individual female monarchs actively seeking milkweed and egg-laying. I had lovely close encounters with them as they criss-crossed the meadow and fluttered against the gusty winds.

Last night we had freezing temperatures and unfortunately some of the milkweed plants have been badly damaged. I estimate that about 20% have some freeze-damage. Thankfully, most of the milkweed looks okay and new sprouts are emerging.

This is a photo of one of the monarchs seen today as she prepares to lay eggs on a newly emerged milkweed sprout (Asclepias viridis).
