There was a wonderful abundance of monarchs today! At 11am it was sunny, 70 degrees F, with 30% humidity, and light winds from the NW. Over about an hour and a half I saw at least 11 individual monarchs: flying, nectaring, resting/sunning, and multiple females egg-laying.
Throughout the day (as it warmed up to 81 degrees F) there were always monarchs to be seen, often quite near each other. I saw a couple of instances of males chasing females. There still seem to be more females than males.
Given that some of the milkweed (and presumably the eggs/larvae) had been taken down by the freeze, it was so good to see this new influx of monarchs and active egg-laying.
This is a photo of one of the lovely monarchs as she is about to lay an egg on a milkweed. She was very prolific and laid many eggs on this sunny day.
