At 12 noon it was 70 degrees F, mostly cloudy, with 75% humidity, and light breezes from the N. The grass was still very wet with dew.
As I went about there were some monarchs flying, but I also accidentally disturbed some that were resting in the grass. In various areas I saw monarchs nectaring, mostly from the yellow and pink thistles. There were females looking for milkweed and egg-laying. A mated pair at one point sailed past me and went to some tree branches. I will add their photo report to Monarch (Other observations).
This general monarch activity continued throughout the day. Temps went up to 77 degrees F.
Checking the milkweed in various places I observed monarch eggs and larvae (1st thru 4th instar). In the late afternoon, I found a 5th instar caterpillar ~ the first I have seen this spring & a real joy to see. I will add him to a Monarch Larva Sighted report.
This is a photo of one of the male monarchs resting on a small milkweed ~ taking a sun break.
