Sightings report image

Date: 04/06/2023

Number: 1

Columbus, the hummningbird that has been living in our heated Greenhouse is confirmed to be female Rufous!! She arrived in our garden in the first week of October, 2022. We first noticed her on October 7th, sitting next to a female Ruby Throated Hummingbird on a mesh fence. She entered the greenhouse on December 7th, 2022 and has been savoring tropical and South American flowers - even resting on Cholla cactus, as if she is in Mexico.

She has completed most of her tail and Primary flight feather molting except p9.

Greenhouse roof vents as well as side vents are staying open between 11am to 5pm on sunny days. Rather than flying out, she stays next to the vents, and flies to catch insects coming in seeking warmth. Nights are still freezing. Red maples and Cornelian Cherry have bloomed. Hyacinths, Daffodils just opened. Still a long way for the garden to be ready for hummingbirds. Our resident hummingbirds arrive on May 2nd or 3rd.
