This is a 5th instar monarch caterpillar resting on an Ascepias viridis milkweed leaf in our back yard. I also found other monarch caterpillars (1st thru 5th instars) that had been hidden during the days of April 5-7, due to cold rain & thunderstorms (we got 8+ inches of rainfall). I was worried about them, so seeing these hardy caterpillars was wonderful!
