Sightings report image

Number: 4

This is a photo of a monarch female caught by its wings in a sticky cobweb. She was fluttering and flailing trying to free herself when I saw her. The blurry photo (because of her non-stop movement) was taken quickly ~ then I gave her a hand. The old wet cobweb came off pretty easily and her wings were fine. She flew away perfectly, thank goodness!

She was one of four monarchs I saw as I did an hour-long check of the fresh milkweed coming up. At 2:30pm it was 65 degrees F, cloudy, 72% humidity, with very light breezes from the NE. I saw one monarch flying low, but two others I managed to startle from their resting spots in milkweed patches. I never feel good when that happens. They flew away to the trees each time, saying "how rude."

I did find 80 monarch eggs on the fresh milkweed (after an hour that seemed like a good number to stop at). Also saw monarch larvae (1st thru 4th instars). Wonderful to see after the cold deluge of storms late last week.
