Around 7 PM, MT, while watching the day slide away and birds around the yard, my wife pointed out a large butterfly high in the Siberian elms along the acequia. With 10X binoculars already in hand, I was able to identify it as a Monarch. We watched for about 10 minutes as the butterfly flew from elm to elm, between ~30' and 75' up, often hovering near branch tips, both leafing out and dead. It flew north a few trees, came back and repeated the flight, finally alighting on a group of dead twigs at a branch end as the sun set.
