Sightings report image

Date: 04/17/2023

Number: 9

Today was a very warm, sunny day that reached 80 degrees F. Throughout the day I observed monarch activity: flying, nectaring, sunning/resting, and two that I saw egg-laying. Some of the milkweed is blooming, but there is also a lot of fresh milkweed sprouting.

This photo is of a female monarch (with faded wings) about to lay her eggs on an Asclepias viridis milkweed. She laid her eggs on multiple plants, but also had to elude a male monarch by hiding in deep grass. Not sure how serious he was, because he gave up looking pretty quickly. She eventually fluttered back up and resumed checking milkweed. I later counted 20+ eggs that she laid on new milkweed.
