This is a male monarch nectaring on prairie plantain flowers ~ very tattered wings. He still was able and sprightly! It was quite windy, mostly cloudy, 70 degrees F, with 81% humidity. We had just had a light rain shower.
I didn't see monarchs as much during the morning and early afternoon, but in the later afternoon I saw six individuals ~ mostly flying and nectaring.
In checking the milkweed plants I found monarch eggs and caterpillars (1st thru 5th instars, including newborns).
Today our first indoor-reared monarch was born. She came from an egg rescued because of a two-day freeze in late March that had severely damaged some of the milkweed plants. She took flight beautifully!
