Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 04/21/2023

Number: 12

I found 12 monarch caterpillars today just on checking a few of the usual areas ~ not an extensive looking. There were 1st - 5th instars & monarch eggs. I found them on green milkweed (Asclepias viridis) plants, which is our predominant native milkweed (99%).

But on watching a monarch lay eggs on slim milkweed (Asclepias linearis) in an upper meadow, I decided to look more closely. This variety of milkweed is quite abundant right now in this pasture, alongside green milkweed. I found this large healthy monarch caterpillar on a slim milkweed. Hopefully, more caterpillars will develop from the eggs the determined monarch laid this afternoon.
