Sightings report image

Date: 04/24/2023

Number: 3

Today at 1:30pm it was 68 degrees F, mostly cloudy, with 56% humidity, and breezy. I saw a monarch flying around in our back yard, so I followed him when he flew to an upper meadow. There he began to nectar on prairie plantains (Arnoglossum plantagineum) ~ this is his photo.

Then, I observed a second faded-winged monarch fluttering low. She eventually went right past me checking on milkweed plants, so I could easily tell she was a female. (Later, she nectared on yellow thistle in our backyard. Her subdued coloring was very distinct.)

In addition to the two elders flying at this time, I also could easily see a bright-winged monarch a bit farther away fluttering low ~ possibly nectaring or checking milkweed.

Yesterday, the high temperature was 61 degrees F, so these monarchs were getting a bit of warmth and later a bit of sun. Both of the elder monarchs seemed healthy and able ~ flying strongly.
