Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 04/29/2023

Number: 1

Finally! Our first male arrived (over a week later than the past 30+ years we've been 'hosting the hummies' here in No.Va. We were getting worried about his (late) journey. He appeared at 4:30 in the afternoon, between the heavy rains we've been getting. He went to 'his' usual feeder, and then sat on 'his' usual branch to preen. He nectared at the indigenous holly tree flowers that are plentiful right now, then he buzzed the treetops where there is purple wisteria growing amidst the deciduous forest. He investigated the peanut suet we place for the woodpeckers, then skimmed a droplet off a leaf. He was also chasing the insects that are popping out. He hovered in front of me for a moment as if to say, 'I'm back!'(sorry, didn't have time to take a photo). Now we wait for his mate who, curiously, arrived a couple weeks before he did last year. By the end of last summer we had at least 3 full healthy families on our feeders and darting thru the woods, protecting 'their' territories and chattering happily. That's our hope for this year, too!
