Sightings report image

Number: 5

At 12 noon it was 75 degrees F, sunny, with 46% humidity, and soft breezes from the E. Like yesterday I saw four faded-winged monarchs, but today only one bright-winged.

The monarchs were spending a lot of time nectaring on slim milkweed blossoms in both upper pastures. They seemed to enjoy being near to each other. Sometimes they would tussle over a flowering milkweed, but it was quite convivial and not serious. All of these monarchs were males. They chose to nectar from the blooming slim milkweed over all other nectar plants, including the nearby prairie plantains.

Though all of them had gossamer wings, they also seemed healthy and flew strongly. Throughout the day I saw them sailing around.

This is a photo of one of the monarchs as he nectars from the delicate flowers of a slim milkweed (Asclepias linearis).
