Hummingbird (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/07/2023

Number: 2

We've been busy planting several gardens throughout the yard, so we haven't had much time to sit and observe our hummingbirds. Soon, we'll be able to! I am seeing 2 of our resident adult male Rubies, as their feeding areas are located where I can easily catch at windows/doors. We see one male often, as his territory is the half of the backyard containing the patio. We're pretty certain this little fellow is "Maverick", a returning 2nd year. Sparky, the alpha male, appears to be back on his throne over the whole front yard. Occasionally, I am seeing a third adult male, whom we believe is Sprite, based on his behavior, a returning 3rd year male. He resides over the other half of the backyard, which is harder to monitor on a regular basis, as that area is just not easy to see unless you sit and specifically look for him. At this point, all of our females are nesting. They only sporadically come down to the feeders. We have perennials coming up and various Spring flowers blooming, such as phlox and Rhododendron. Ad we're putting in lots of pollinator/hummingbird magnet flowers throughout the yard, including their favorites, Cuphea vermillionaire, various varieties of Salvia, porterweed, shrimp plant, Nasturtium, as well as many others. It's been an awesome Spring so far, albeit a bit chilly and wet, but we're not complaining as we know the heat is coming and we'll be wishing for the rain to return. We're looking forward to a great summer!
