Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/07/2023

Number: 1

1st male appeared late this afternoon abound 5:30 pm, and visited a Humm Zinger feeder that’s been waiting for him, with big, red, velvet bows and ribbons.

Weather: overcast, slight breeze, occasional sprinkles, approx 60 degrees.

Usually hummingbirds arrive before the Rosebreasted Grosbeaks and the Orioles.

This year the Grosbeaks started arriving last week; and the Orioles arrived today, with the hummingbirds.

We’re enjoying a cool spring. Early nectar: dogwood trees, pachysandra has blossoms, Dicentra luxuriant plants are blooming, a few daffodils, hyacinths Lamium, hellebores, and 3 tiny, volunteer, pansies that re-seeded.

In a week or two, native columbines and the wild honeysuckle that covers the ridges will begin to provide additional nectar.

Our little guest was too fast for my camera, I don’t know if he stayed or ventured north :)

Happy Spring, happy everything Journey North fans.
