Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/11/2023

Number: 2

Well, better late than never!! I just had my first hummingbird of the 2023 Hummbirding Season. It was a female Ruby-throated at 8:24 PM feeding at my west O'neill Red Horse-chestnut tree's blossoms which are just reaching full height and are 1/2 open. She was joined by a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird at 8:32 PM. He was J-diving her N->S above the W.O.R.H.C. and came to rest at its top, center, dead branch facing north towards me watching them through the sliding door wall window with my trusty old Bushnells. We'll have to see if they begin to use the feeder tomorrow. If they do, I'll be happy to guess they've returned home from last year. I have 4 little Vermillionaire Cupheas out which the male fed from at 8:37 PM and 8:47 PM. Other bloomers in the yard are a big Bleeding Heart, a Flowering Almond, 3 Azaleas which are just beginning to open a few blossoms, and my neighbor's giant Lilac, little Dogwood, and several Red Crab Apple trees. New additions to my yard this year include two Bloomerang Lilacs which are just starting to grow their flowers, a Rainier Cherry Tree, and a Stella Cherry Tree. Both of the Cherries had already dropped their petals by the time I bought them on 5-8-2023, and 5-9-2023 respectively. I hope everyone has a Hummerific Season!
