Monarch, Captive-Reared
Sightings report image

Date: 05/17/2023

Number: 3

These two monarchs emerged today after turning to chrysalis on May 8, 2023.
I planted swamp milkweed in a pot April 12th and I believe the eggs must have been laid about April 8-10 in the greenhouse where I purchased the plants in Norman, OK. Female emerged first today and then a couple hours later the male. There is a third monarch but it struggled to eclose and has wings that never opened although it tried. It is resting inside the enclosure. The plant was outside until recent storms and I brought it inside until today when I could tell they were ready to journey north! The female stayed around my garden where milkweed is growing all afternoon until evening. The male landed on the ground when it left the encolsure but then moved to my foot and climbed my leg to rest on my knee. This is all a first time experience for me!
