Hummingbird (OTHER Observations)
Sightings report image

Date: 05/28/2023

Number: 5

Week of observations 22nd to 28th May, confirmed at least five ruby-throated hummingbird adults observed in the vicinity of feeder, three males seen at once on 22nd May, two females seen at once on 27th May.

This season's dominant male cannot dominate as strictly as males of past seasons. He tries, but there are frequent times another male or female feeds and he watches from his perch, or even perches on the feeder or drinks simultaneously before any chasing.

Chasing was often steady this week, and activity slightly increased by the 28th of May, estimating six to eight RTHBs around the feeder territory. Observed females perched near ground in fields at least three times with a male doing his display flight above, once or twice the females didn't seem to accept him. The past two days, one or two more graceful, confident large females appeared, I think one even chased a male off the feeder at one point before quickly returning to drink. Necter consumption continued steadily at about 35ml per day average.
