Our Current Collection of Milkweeds
Many of our milkweed plants have developed nicely since my first report last month. They are doing well regardless of being in shade or full sun. However, they currently are pretty thirsty; we have yet to receive any significant rain thus far this month. (Normally, we would have received about 4.7 inches of precipitation at this point in May.)
We currently have 3 kinds of milkweed plants growing in our various garden spaces, as can be seen in the accompanying photograph:

| Common Milkweed - These are mostly new plants from seeds from a few plants that were nearby this part of our garden last year. So now we have a lot more plants, both in amongst our garden raspberry canes and in our lawn. |
| Common Milkweed - This plant is a returning survivor from last year. It is located to the west of the plants shown in Photo Part 3. It is likely the parent of some of the new plants in Photo Part 3, and it is already full of buds. |
The chicken wire fences are to dissuade critters from nibbling on any of the early sprouts. Of course, if and when any Monarch caterpillars show up, they are welcome to munch away to their hearts' content.
We also have a tropical milkweed in a pot on our front porch that came back after wintering over in our basement since last fall. It was too shy to be photographed today. I think it is waiting to pose until it is in full bloom again this summer.
