Sightings report image

Date: 05/29/2023

Number: 3

At 11:45am it was 83 degrees F, partly cloudy, with 60% humidity, and light breezes from the E. I observed three monarchs flying, resting, and nectaring. All had somewhat faded wings. At least two were males (the other not sure about). All of them were seen near each other within a 15 minute window. The two males were patrolling. At one point they had a momentary air tussle with each other (not serious) and then sailed in separate directions.

We had been seeing monarchs in the past week (one or two at a time), but I had not been trying to follow them or get a photo.

The green milkweed (Asclepias viridis) is making seed pods ~ some still green and some now bursting open with seeds and fluff. The slim milkweed (Asclepias viridis) is still flowering, but some plants are producing slim seed pods. There are abundant nectar wildflowers, especially lemon beebalm (Monarda citriodora). Lots of other butterflies and bumblebees are sailing around.

This is a photo of one of the male monarchs briefly resting on a tall grass stem under a shady tree.
