Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 06/04/2023

Number: 1

One adult monarch butterfly observed flying low and meandering over a field near a woods edge on 4th June, shown pictured in a collage. This is the first monarch I've managed to capture in an image this season so far, it was about fifty feet away.

Report submitted on 7th June: since previous report on 29th May, I've observed at least one monarch adult each day, flying over fields at this location. This is much more encouraging than the very few observed all of last season. Many wildflowers, shrubs, and trees are still flowering and the air is very fragrant, despite the extreme dry conditions with no precipitation in eighteen days so far (last rain was 20th May).

On 2nd June, 1000 to 1030, 77F to 82F, observed one monarch four times flying in one acre area, the last one appeared foraging among grass in an area I had not inspected for milkweed. I inspected about 15 milkweeds, found no eggs or larvae. Half of the plants showed signs of distress with shriveled tops or complete failure (defoliated/dying), a few had signs of leaves partly eaten. I watered some of them (milkweed report submitted). 89F by mid-afternoon, sunny/some haze, observed monarchs flying three more times before sunset for a total of seven fliers sighted today, uncertain if it is seven individuals or one seen seven times.
