Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/25/2023

Number: 3

I've been protecting monarch larva in 3 foot high by 2 feet square habitats for 5 years. They are kept outside. I cut the milkweed they are on, put them in bottles with water and give them plenty of room. I can fit 12 - 14 in my two habitats.

By this time in past years my habitats would have been filled, leaving others living in the wild.

This year I found three on one day, and a fourth a few days later. I've been checking every day and keeping the milkweed clean and ready. I have about 40 plants ready to receive monarch eggs.

Two days ago, three transformed into chrysalis and one is preparing for transformation.

In past years I would have successfully released approx 60. Last year I only released 25.
