Hummingbird (OTHER Observations)
Sightings report image

Date: 06/12/2023

Number: 3

Observations from 9th to 12th June: Feeder usage may be ticking up again from almost none the previous few days, no measurement yet.

9th: Feeder seemed little used, but at least three ruby-throated hummingbirds visited Friday evening, observed at least two adult males and one adult female. At sunset, mostly cloudy, two males perched at feeder, the dominant one puffed up as if cold, then chased the other off its perch and perched alone.

10th: Saturday only one male observed around the area.

11th: At least three adults around feeder on Sunday from two males early afternoon to an adult male and female together around sunset, perched at feeder and also went off together.

12th: Monday evening, feeder consumption appears to be ticking up, no measurement yet. Attached picture is series of views over a fifteen minute period of a male, with the distinctive shape of his gorget edge, mostly dominating the area, appears well developed. I wonder if he is the offspring, or perhaps grandchild, of Bigfoot, the brutal male last seen two seasons ago. Temperatures trending down, 76F Friday, 60F today, with nighttime lows near 40F.

Based upon May 9th first arrivals and May 11th first observation of mating rituals, today would be the earliest date to expect fledglings.
