Hummingbird (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/16/2023

Number: 5

Seeing several every day throughout the day, both on flowers and feeders. Lots of their favorite annuals and perennials in bloom right now, including Cuphea vermillionaire, many different varieties of salvia, Bee Balm, Verbena, Shrimp plant, Nasturtium, Penstemon, Major Wheeler's honeysuckle, different varieties of Fuchsia and Buddleia, and many others. I hear and see chases throughout the day, although we are definitely not at peek yet. I feel as if the females are still with their first nests of the season. And I do think first nests were delayed this year due to the prolonged cooler Spring temps. The females come to both the feeders and flowers much more briefly. Yesterday afternoon, one of our adult males displayed his mating dive for one of the females as she was attempting to feed from the honeysuckle. She hid from him and then took off as soon as she had a chance. We have at least 2 returning resident adult males, perhaps 3.
