Hummingbird (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/20/2023

Number: 4

What a busy fledgling debut day! This was the most active one in many years. I estimate that about 5 ounces of nectar was consumed between sunrise and 8:46 p.m. Sunset was 8:23.

At one point this morning, I saw four at the same time. There were multiples around all day. Activity was busier than the arrival of the females in May. They chased about quite a bit, flew each other off of feeders, and the male was trying to court the females. This evening, they flew off a Phoebe from the rope swing. The Phoebe nest is near the nectar feeders.

It appeared to me that there was just the one male and two females, so I'm presuming both nests fledged today, but I will keep my eyes open for more. I also think that these are all new adult birds, no returns from last year. The male is definitely a different one, based on his personality and interactions with the others. He's a bit of a bully and didn't learn to share in kindergarten.
