This 1st instar was still an egg when I found it in a neighbor’s yard. The leaf was likely to be crushed by sidewalk traffic so I picked it. I will return the caterpillar to the host plant soon, but this kind of help makes this a “captive reared” monarch.
The yard the plant was in was a little rough and unkempt, and it looked like they had either pulled out or let die most of the showy milkweed stems that used to be there.
A few houses up the street us a beautiful yard with lots of showy milkweed and other pollinator plants. I looked for eggs there, too, but found none. The milkweed there is super healthy - tall, huge and often fairly thin leaves, often in some shade. I guess must not be the right taste for that monarch’s egg laying. I’ll infer that this egg was laid last Thursday, same day as first eggs in my yard about a half mile away.
