Unfortunately, I can only show one of the many pollinator garden areas scattered about my two acre homestead out in the countryside. Any plantings I have are all neonic and pesticide free as I use no chemicals at all anywhere in my yard. My home is completely planted around on all four sides and I try to mix my planting so that there are pollinator friendly offerings from spring to late fall here in zone 5b. Following are many of the trees, shrubs and flowers that can be found all about on my two acres, which the pollinators enjoy. 4 varieties of crabtrees, sunburst honey locust and a few fruit trees. As for shrubs, there is several varieties of lilac, ninebark, wiegela, spirea, viburnum, hydrangeas, rose-of-sharons and a few rhododendrons. A not all inclusive listing of many perennials to be found in my garden beds are: 20 varieties of heuchera, 7 varieties of hosta, coneflowers, black-eyed-susans, coreopsis, delphiniums, monarda, bell flowers, asters, lavender, russian sage, 8 varieties of salvia, foxglove, yarrow, penstemons, verionicas, red hot pokers, 6 varieties of sedum, butterfly weed and many other less noticeable pollinator friendly plantings. Other than the organized pattern of planting at the entrance to my home and by the patio, I tend to let many of the flower bed plantings grow naturally as the plants choose, occasionally thinning and giving away starts to others, thus avoiding any one plant specie from dominating. I have one just-let-it go flower bed areas where native milkweed tends to grow among the mostly coneflowers and black-eyes susans and a few rose bushes. There is one other area with daisies, liatris and obedient plants that milkweed grows up through and scattered about. Some people find my beds unkept looking, but I like it that way. Besides, I’ve never heard the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds complain at all.
