I have large swamp milkweed plants in my backyard- I live on the southwest side of Chicago near Evergreen Park, Ill. Over the past two weeks I spotted 2 Monarch butterflies. Today I observed my milkweed plant had been eaten. I observed then the tiny Monarch butterfly caterpillar. I recognized this because we were able to bring 2 Monarch caterpillars to adulthood & release them last year. We have a butterfly net cage we purchased last year. The caterpillar is scrunched down inside the top of the plant in the photo.
