Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)
Sightings report image

Date: 06/24/2023

Number: 1

Sadly this is the first larva I found this season. Deceased monarch larva on common milkweed leaf, could not see physical damage other than partially dessicated as if about 1 day deceased. Wondered of possible causes: killed by predator, hot/extremely dry drought conditions (no precip 20th May to 10th June, then 0.7 inch rain to 15th June, then no precip up to today 24th June), wildfire particulate matter on vegitation with moderate to dangerous PM air quality the past couple weeks, etc.

Coarsely inspected about twenty common milkweed plants, found no eggs or live larva. Casually still observing two or three adult monarchs flying each day.

Based upon first adult sighted date, temperatures, and the late instar of the deceased larva, I expect surviving larvae will begin emerging as the next gen adults during the first week of July.
