We have been observing a nest in a birch tree outside of our dining room window. The parents have been taking turns feeding the new hatchlings which we believe have just hatched maybe yesterday. Both the male and female feed, quickly rotating from nest to feeding, taking turns. The male also is sitting over the hatchlings. We saw this occurring yesterday and today. It is fascinating to watch the parent manually chop up the worms with their beak before gathering up the smaller pieces for delivery to the tiny hatchlings. It appears once the babies are fed the parent will consume what is left in the delivery.
