Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 07/21/2023

Number: 1

This larva emerged on 07/21/23 on whorled milkweed. I had seen the female ovipositing the egg on 07/17/23 and kept a daily watch to see how it was progressing. On 07/20/23 I noticed that the end of the egg looked black, and I knew this indicated that emergence was nearing. On 07/21/23 I checked the egg in the mid-morning and found it unchanged since the day before. In the afternoon, I checked the egg again, and discovered the very tiny larva just moving away from the opened egg case! It was breezy and the milkweed plants were swaying slightly, so it was difficult to get a clear image. Temperatures over the 4 day period prior to the egg hatching were mostly in the 90s and sunny, though on the day the egg hatched, the weather had shifted to slightly cooler.
