Sightings report image

Date: 07/28/2023

Number: 36

I saw a hummingbird resting on a fence while nectaring and concluded it was lazy. But I saw a couple of them resting on inflorescence while nectaring. Then found out that Juveniles indeed rest on plants while nectaring if their wing muscles haven't yet strengthened enough to fly constantly. Juveniles are buzzing around in pairs with playful chasing/swooping, possibly practicing hummingbird aerobatics. They seem to be unaware of danger - flying too close to humans/birds, sitting on mesh fence in open areas like the one in photo.
