See my reports from 6-9-23, 7-10-23, 7-12-23. These all began as wild late instar caterpillars in our yard that I brought in to finish as chrysalises.
These are grand-kids of one wild female Monarch that visited our yard on 6-9-23! I released 4 that eclosed on 7-10-23 and were joined by other wild Monarchs in our yard. As a result - I found 2 wild 4th instar caterpillars on 7-24-23 and brought them in to finish as chrysalises - due to eclose in August. We do not usually get Monarchs in the yard leaving caterpillars behind until the 4th generation in late Summer/Fall.
